Congratulations, you got a raise! Here are 5 things to do with it

Congratulations, you got a raise Here are 5 things to do with itCongratulations, you got a raise Here are 5 things to do with itScoring a raise can feel like winning the lottery, but that definitely doesnt mean you should spend it all. Instead, give each dollar a real purpose. Heres what to do once you come into more cash.Give yourself more money for emergenciesThis is the most important thing to do with the extra money from a bonus if you havent already, according to a deutsche post ag on the website of entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, and business strategist Tony Robbins.First things first If you dont have an emergency fund, this is your top priority. Yes, before investments, and even before paying down debt. A shocking 62% of Americans have less than $1,000 saved for an emergency, and frankly, if you have anything less than three months worth of living expenses, this is where your bonus NEEDS to go. If anything were to happen, say a medical emergency, this cushion could save you from financial ruin, the post says.Chip away at your debtNBC News reports on how to put your raise to good use when it comes to getting rid of pesky debt.Theres no better return on your money (except, perhaps, for 401(k) matching dollars) than the one you get paying down high interest rate credit card debt. The return you get is equal to your interest rate - and its guaranteed. So if youre carrying credit card debt, that bump in your salary is money you can use to finally get it off your plate. Start with your highest interest rate card and pay as much as you can toward that one while making tiefpunkt payments on the rest when its retired, move on to the one with the next highest interest rate, NBC News reports.Dont become a victim of lifestyle inflationLearnVest cautions against blowing through your new money, or engaging in lifestyle inflation.Consider upping your retirement contributions by the same percentage as your raise - so if your income increased by 5%, so should you r retirement contributions. The same goes for your rainy day fund because your emergency savings target is tied to whatever your take-home pay is at the time, the report says. The article suggests dedicating at least half of each bump in salary to financial goals, like emergency savings, retirement, credit card debt, and more.Dont be blinded by the bills - figure out how much youll actually get to keepOnce factoring taxes and other expenses, you might end up pocketing a less than you thought. Direct banking and payment services company Discover Bankadvises on how to get a realistic look at your money once you get an upward salary bump. When you get a raise, start by figuring out how your boost in salary will affect your paychecks. Just because youre going to be earning an extra $4,000 per year, for example, doesnt mean that will be your additional take-home pay, it says. Youll need to factor in your tax withholding and any other deductions from your paycheck (think health insurance, commuter benefits, office gym membership). To determine your net pay increase when you get a raise, subtract your old paycheck from your new paycheck. This is the amount that should inform adjustments to yourmonthly budget.but have a little fun within your meansTheres nothing wrong with responsibly working toward the things you dream about the most.A Monster article features advice from Brian Jones, vice president of financial-planning firm Cooper, Jones and McLeland. You can set aside a little money from your raise or bonus and painlessly finance a big vacation in just a few years, he says. Saving $300 per month in a money-market account earning 3 percent can add up to more than $7,400 in two years.

The Hiring Process From 3 Perspectives

The Hiring Process From 3 PerspectivesThe Hiring Process From 3 PerspectivesWhen Anthony C. opened his title and escrow company, he knew one of his first steps would be to find a controller, and the hiring process had to be just right.Janiece L. had worked with a staffing agency when she was a bookkeeper to bring in seasonal accounting help, and again after shed studied for her accounting degree. When it was time for her to find a new job as a controller, she knew just who to call.Dianne LaValley, a senior vice president for Finance Accounting, rose to the occasion. Shed already worked with both Anthony and Janiece, and as a specialist with 20 years of experience in recruiting and placing financial professionals, she knew how to make a match, despite todays hiring challenges in finance and accounting.Janiece is now the controller at Anthonys company, and Dianne is still working behind the scenes to help companies and job seekers meet their objectives. Looking back, how do each of th em describe the hiring process? We caught up with all three to get their stories.A CEO with a lot on his plateQ You gave the hiring process an A+. Can you describe your experience?Anthony The year was full of challenges - from the buying/closing process to brand creation and staffing of a new company. When it came time to filling the controller position, I budgeted for recruiting services. As we grow as an operation, this is going to be a key position. We wanted a controller who is going to be with us for years to come.Do you want help in hiring finance and accounting staff?WORK WITH USDianne helped to parse through resumes and weed out those who werent the right professional or cultural fit. She pared it down to three candidates, and we decided on two interviews. We received the resumes ahead of time, and she kept it fast and efficient. We had 30 minutes to interview each person, one right after another. The process worked well, because we could easily compare one interviewee agai nst another. My colleague and I both knew who we wanted to hire after the interviews, and we extended an offer and hired Janiece.A controller looking for the right fitQ Why did you choose to work with a recruiting firm, and how would you describe the process of working with a job recruiter?Janiece Id worked with Dianne back when I was doing the hiring, and I was happy with her service. When I decided I needed a new job, I knew I needed to reach out to her again.I had been self-employed for so long that I didnt have the time or knowledge about how to get myself out there. I also didnt have any referrals except coworkers. She first placed me in a position that was a great learning experience in healthcare. After a year and a half, I wanted to continue to grow but needed to conduct a confidential search and reached out to her again.Dianne was great at identifying where I was or wasnt a good fit. She knew what I was capable of and took the time to learn what the client needed and could o ffer. I interviewed with Anthony, the CEO, and was hired within a day or two.A hiring process built on relationshipsQ How did you meet Anthony and Janiece and use your expertise to bring them together so quickly?Dianne I met Anthony through networking, and we kept in anflug over the years. Id helped him with previous staffing needs, so when he decided to launch a new geschftliches miteinander and hire a controller, he called me, and we met over coffee. Meanwhile, my mind was spinning, thinking of people who would work best for him.Id met Janiece when she was a bookkeeper at a company she co-owned. She needed some seasonal financial help, so in the next two years, I helped her to staff various roles and got to know her well. Later, when she decided to leave the company and go back to school, she called me about finding a new position. An opportunity arose with a healthcare company, and even though she didnt have experience in that industry, they hired her. She was driven and poised, and she ended up helping them with a merger before she called me again to ask about job possibilities. The timing was perfect, and I got in touch with Anthony. It was a quick turnaround, because Janiece has a calm demeanor, very much like his, and she was able to bring so much to the table with her experience setting up a new company.Suggestions from the recruiterQ Is this a typical scenario for an employer and a job seeker in todays job market?Dianne This is just one of many stories I have like this, where I have a long-term relationship and can say, Oh my, Ive got your person I make sure I get to know the people I work with so I can make that ideal match. Some candidates, like Janiece, are in a passive job search in finance and accounting, and I tell my clients professionals like her are not going to apply to their ads. Almost every city is small enough that you cant just throw your resume out there if youre looking confidentially and dont want your current employer to know youre lo oking.Q Do you have any suggestions for others out there, either hiring or hoping to be hired?Dianne Recruiting is about relationship building, and job seekers and hiring managers should connect with someone they trust who listens to them.Endorsement from the job seekerQ What do you tell others about the benefits of partnering with a recruiter in a job search?Janiece The first time I sent in my resume, Dianne made sure I included everything. There was technology testing, typing, an Excel knowledge test, general accounting questions and background testing. She also met with me for quite awhile in person. She was easy to work with, both by phone and email. She answered or got right back to me.For my current position, wed worked together enough where we didnt need to meet in person, and because of Diannes connections, she knew about the opening at the title company before it was posted. I am happy in my current role. The conclusion from the bossQ Would you choose again for your hiring n eeds?Anthony Oh yes, in a heartbeat. How a recruiter can help you hireWhether youre a business owner or CFO, you may need help in the hiring process at some point during the year. You dont have to do it alone. When tapping the extensive networks of a specialized recruiting firm, you get access to a larger talent pool than you might discover yourself in todays job market. A recruiter can also help you evaluate candidates based on the required skills, performance expectations, organizational fit and work experience.

How the United States Air Force (USAF) Promotes Members

How the United States Air Force (USAF) Promotes MembersHow the United States Air Force (USAF) Promotes MembersEnlisted vorrckens in the Air Force vary by job and depend on how many available slots there are in the next grade.Promotions up to E-4 are automatic and are based on Time-in-Serve (TIS) and Time-in-Grade (TIG). However, for promotions to E-5 and above there must be an open position made available because a person retires, is promoted or otherwise leaves the slot vacant for a new promotion. This means that for over-manned jobs, it can very hard to get promoted, while those in undermanned jobs may be promoted much faster than the service-wide average. How Air Force Promotions Differ The Air Force first determines the overall promotion tarif across the whole of the Air Force for the promotion cycle by forecasting how many slots will be available. It then takes this rate and applies it to all of the jobs- referred to asAir Force Specialty Codes(AFSC)- almost equally (see belo w). Example of Promotion to Technical Sergeant (E-6) For example, lets say the Air Force determines that 20 percent of all eligible Staff Sergeants(E-5)will be promoted to the rank of Technical Sergeant (E-6) for the next promotion cycle. Each and every career field (job) will promote 20 percent of their eligible Staff Sergeants to Technical Sergeant, regardless of whether or not the job is over-manned or undermanned. Why Promotion Percentages Arent Quite Equal The percentages for each job dont come out evenly for two reasons The Air Force rounds the numbers up for each job. For example, if the overall promotion rate for the cycle is 10 percent, and there are 100 people eligible in Job A, then 10 people will be promoted (10 percent). However, what if there were 113 people eligible? 10 percent of 113 is 11.3. You cant promote one-third of a person, so in this case, the Air Force would round it up and promote 12 people. That would result in a promotion rate in that job of 10.6 percent, instead of 10 percent. If there is only one person eligible for promotion in that AFSC, he or she would be promoted- assuming the commander recommends the person for promotion. Thus the promotion rate in that job would be 100 percent. Each year, the Air Force selects some critically manned career fields to receive an extra five percentage points for promotions. So, if the overall promotion rate is 20 percent, some critically mannedfields would be allowed to promote 25 percent of their eligible people. How the Air Force Selects People for Promotions When determining who gets promoted, the Air Force uses Weighted Airman Promotion System, or WAPS,points. Quite simply, you add up the WAPS points and those members in a job with the most WAPS points are selected for promotion until the total percentage of promotions is honigwein in that job.

But you can survive a layoff- and land on your feet in a promising new career- if you take a deep breath and follow a few tips. How you handle yourself in the days following a layoff can make or break your chances of landing a new job quickly. Losing your job is hard, not only is your paycheck affected, but also your self-esteem, identity, and confidence take a hit, too.Although it is prototyp to feel hurt, angry, scared, and anxious about the future when your professional life has taken a blow, there are things you can do to take control of the situation and come out ahead in the long run.Fast Company recently published an article, Worried You Might Be Laid Off? Heres What to Do, that outlined several strategies to help newly laid-off workers handle the shock of unemployment gracefully and professionally.Whileno one wants to think about being laid off, one of the best thing a professional can do, according to the Fast Company article, is to be prepared for the unthinkable before it happens. Here are 10tips to survive a layoff1. Control your emotions. You have worked hard to earn your professional reputation. An emotional outburst can tarnish that reputation in seconds. When faced with unpleasant news, take a deep breath and give yourself a chance to process your situation before you lose control and say something you mightregret.2. Dont lose your dignity.Begging for your job back isnt going to work. Your company has been preparing for your layoff well before you received the news. There is little the manager can do at this point to save your job, so keep your dignity and self-respect intact and focus on the conversation.3.Think about your next job.How will your separation from the company be represented? What is your company going to say about you when future employers ask for a reference? It is a good idea to ask for an official docum ent- in writing- that states you were laid off and not fired.4.Ask for help. Can your company help you find a new job? The worst they can say is no. Some companies hire consultants to help laid-off workers find new jobs. Ask if your company is willing to provide career coaching or other kinds of support to help you land a new position. Try to get this information in writing.5. Apply for other positions in your company.Ask if you are eligible for other positions within your organizations. Some companies have policies in distributions-mix that require a waiting period before an employee is eligible for rehireor freelance opportunities, but many dont. It doesnt hurt to ask.6. Make sure to take care of yourself.Dont forget to ask about health insurance, severance pay, and when to expect your final paycheck. Find out if you will be compensated for unused sick, personal, or vacation time and how any bonuses, stock options, tuition reimbursement, or commissions will be handled.7. Take time before you sign. You need time to process the information you are given before you sign anything. You will most likely think of more questions in the days following your layoff. Ask for time to review all the information and to clarify any questions that come up. It might be a good idea to have a lawyer review your exit document before you sign it.8.Register for unemployment compensation immediately.Even if you are offered a severance pay package, register for unemployment compensation right away. In some states, if you wait too long to register for unemployment, you might no longer be eligible. Find out what you are entitled to and take action to get it as soon as possible.9. Update your resume.Your full-time job is now finding a new job. Your resume is one of the most important tools you have to get an employers attention and to provide them with the information needed to ask you for an interview. has published several great articles on how to design a resume that will get you to t he next step of the hiring process.10. Get a handle on monthly bills. What can you trim from your monthly budget? This is a good time to go through your bills and cut the fat. Are you paying more than you have to for insurance, cell phones, cable, or other items? Can you save money by following a meal plan or shopping in bulk? Being laid off doesnt necessarily mean you have to stop allspending, but it is wise to cut expenses where you can.Whether or not you have personally experienced a layoff, it is a good idea to think about how you would respond if you found yourself in this unfortunate position. Sadly, layoffs are a real part of business, the more prepared you are to handle the situation professionally, the faster you will be able to move on to your next great opportunity. More trendspotting More trendspotting British knowledge management mavens Lee Bryant and Penny Edwards have published a report entitled Social Networking for the Legal Profession (h/t Paul Lippe). The report is a bit pricy (245*), but Edwards previews their findings in a series of posts on the Headshift blog. In the first installment, she outlines the challenging trendsin addition to the economic crisisfacing the legal profession. Highlights:The implications of commoditization (price and quality are no longer the only differentiators or drivers of competitive advantage.) The rise of the knowledge economy and knowledge markets (what and who you know determines where and how far you go)Technological advances (Unlike previous generations of technology, which essentially offered the opportunity of 'substitution innovation' (doing what had always been done a little better), new social technologies offer possibilities for radical change)The expectation of younger lawyers is that they can have the same freedom, flexibility and power inside and beyond the firm as they can using social tools for their personal affairs. -posted by brian*At 159 pages, thats roughly $2.50 per page.
